CRS History in Congo-Brazzaville
Although Congo-Brazzaville was relatively prosperous in the 1980s, economic decline and political instability characterized the whole of the 1990s. Three times during the decade long-standing political tensions exploded into civil wars resulting in destruction, population displacement and economic hardships The per capita income dropped from just over $1,000 in 1986 to $340 in 1996. External debt rose to 289 percent of the country's Gross National Product and 433 percent of its export revenue.
CRS has worked in Congo-Brazzaville (also known as the Republic of Congo) since 1997. Activities in Congo-Brazzaville are coordinated out of CRS' office in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
