CRS in Egypt

CRS History in Egypt

Egypt has one of the oldest cultures in the world. Although still predominantly rural, the country is experiencing a shift in its population from rural to urban areas. While strides have been made in improving the standard of living for much of the population, disparity in income and access to resources and services still characterize life for many Egyptians. Illiteracy also remains high and poverty particularly impacts rural women and children.

CRS began working in Egypt in 1956 at the invitation of then President Nasser. CRS helped with relief efforts for Suez War victims. Currently, the agency has an office in Cairo, staffed by 19 staff.
