Southern Africa Faces Severe Floods, Cyclones
Months of torrential rainfall has pounded areas of southern Africa, causing widespread flooding that has inundated cropland and destroyed homes.
Hundreds of thousands of families across Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and Angola are now displaced and need basic survival supplies.
Catholic Relief Services workers in these countries are currently providing emergency relief, assessing damage and needs, and devising a comprehensive response plan.
Additionally, CRS is helping families in Madagascar cope with the current cyclonic season, which continues through March. Two cyclones have already struck the island. Overflowing rivers have also placed even greater flood strain on communities.
In areas of Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi, heavy rainfall began last December and is expected to continue into April.
CRS' Work in Southern Africa
CRS began working in southern African countries nearly two decades ago. Our programs involve agriculture, disaster relief and preparedness, microfinance, food security, and HIV treatment and support.
