Moldova is of one the most impoverished countries in Europe. People in small towns and rural communities suffer the most from the country's widespread poverty, unemployment and social disintegration.

Two-thirds of the country's poor live in rural areas. They have been hurt by the erosion of education, health, and other public services as well as by the post-Soviet collapse of the agricultural sector. Many working-age people are leaving rural areas to find employment in large cities and foreign countries, leaving single mothers, children and the elderly increasingly isolated and vulnerable.

By mobilizing private businesses, nongovernmental organizations and government agencies, Catholic Relief Services creates new and sustainable jobs. With jobs, people can make the choice to stay in their villages, earn money and remain close to their children.

CRS also improves the quality of life in these villages by helping communities make changes. Villages work on projects that improve drinking water, further the role of women or create activities for youth. By partnering with local mayors, school directors, parent-teacher associations and businesses, CRS is able to revitalize villages and prepare young people for a better, safer life.

Active in Moldova since 2004, CRS is based in Chisinau, the capital. CRS Moldova works with partners to reach thousands of vulnerable people in remote villages scattered throughout the country. Michael McKennett is the head of office for CRS Moldova.
