CRS History in Moldova
A former Soviet republic, Moldova declared its independence in 1991. Since that time, Moldova has struggled to transition into a democratic nation and market economy. Three economic collapses, as devastating as America's Great Depression of the 1920s, have been major setbacks. With support from the government and international organizations, Moldova continues in its development toward becoming a fully functioning state.
CRS entered the scene in 2004 to help respond to the massive emigration which is putting young Moldovan women at risk of being trafficked. CRS helps prepare Moldovans for crises in the future and build their economic resiliency.
