CRS Work in Togo
With a fragile political system, rival ethnic groups, and its position as a transit point for goods and travelers, Togo is vulnerable to violence and the spread of HIV. Catholic Relief Services recognizes these circumstances and helps groups prevent conflict and educate Togolese about HIV and AIDS.
Health
CRS and our partners protect the people in Togo living with HIV by providing holistic care, including medical, psychological, nutritional and spiritual support.
CRS' partners train community volunteers to provide home-based care and pastoral services for HIV-positive Togolese who can no longer travel to medical centers. By encouraging community-based care, the project helps alleviate the feeling of isolation among people living with HIV.
Peacebuilding
In recent years, political unrest has scarred Togo and caused thousands of Togolese to flee to neighboring countries. CRS and our partners promote nonviolent conflict resolution. Discussion groups have been set up for youth, traditional chiefs and rural women's associations. These groups foster a culture of peace and raise awareness of human rights. Paralegals have been trained to help resolve local conflicts and promote nonviolence through local radio, theater and traditional drumming.
