Year of Faith: Sacredness and Dignity of the Human Person

Lectio Divina

Leader reads the passage once.

In the beginning, …God created the heavens and the earth….

Then God said: Let us make human beings in our image, after our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the tame animals, all the wild animals, and all the creatures that crawl on the earth.

God created mankind in his image;
   in the image of God he created them;
   male and female he created them.

Genesis 1:1, 26-27, 31 (New American Bible)

Ask participants to reflect on Question 1 silently, then with the group.

1. What does this reading say about who God is?

Read the passage aloud again, and repeat the reflection with Question 2.

2. What does it say about the nature of humanity? What does it mean to be created in God's image?

Read the passage for a third time, reflecting on Question 3.

3. Does the reading speak to you of the global mission of humanity, individually and/or collectively, to serve the most vulnerable? What does this tell you about your own life?

Closing Prayer

God of Love, Creator of all things, we are grateful for the gift of life. We believe that you created each of us in your image, with equal dignity and promise. You never fail to fulfill your promises, O God. We lift up our eyes to You, full of hope for a future free of poverty, filled with life, peace and joy. We pray for the courage to act on behalf of life for all of Your Creation. Amen.
